Montana Sporting Journal is a bi-monthly publication covering all things hunting and fishing in the state of Montana. We feature articles and departments relevant to the unique and diverse sporting opportunities found in Montana. At Montana Sporting Journal we take pride in our editorial content and photography.

Feature Articles

Our goal is to provide timely, knowledgeable, experience-based narrative specific to Montana hunting and fishing destinations. Destinations should include the famous and the lesser known locations, while keeping the protection of the resource in mind. Our feature articles provide readers with the how, what, where and when of Montana hunting and fishing, instilling in them the enthusiasm and confidence needed to successfully carry out their own Montana adventures.

Feature article requirements:

  • Include any relevant history and a thorough description of conditions experienced.
  • Detailed description of fishing/hunting techniques and equipment.
  • Provide information pertaining to seasonal conditions if applicable.
  • Include current hunting/fishing regulations, and permit/license information.
  • Address any pertinent conservation and/or ethical issues.
  • Include any helpful personal anecdotes from your own experiences.
  • Feature article length should be 1,500 to 2,000 words

Manuscript Submissions and Payment

Initial contact with the editor by e-mail is preferred. Unsolicited manuscripts sent by mail should include a SASE if you would like your material returned.

We reserve the option to edit all manuscripts; however we will minimize editing to avoid changing the style or subject matter of articles.
Manuscripts should be submitted with the author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail and manuscript word count on the first page of the manuscript. Manuscripts should be emailed to the editor.

Payment is made upon publication date and varies from $350-$750, depending on length and quality of photo support.  We buy first print rights and expect original work.

Photography Guidelines

We do accept photography on speculation, however, subject matter is limited to Montana scenes and activities.

We prefer to work with high-quality digital images, 300dpi minimum. Slides are accepted upon previous approval. If appropriate, specify if your work has a model release and please include any captions that are not obvious.

Photo Essays-Negotiable, Typically $750-$1000
